I wish to extend my deep gratitude to all involved in my unusual opportunity to witness our Gibsons community members and first responders springing into action with fantastic teamwork, to handle an off-road emergency.

As it turned out, on July 3, I happened to be at the centre of this emergency. This time, however, it was not as a former SAR member, but as the subject of the intensive, well-coordinated and executed rescue from the bottom of a local ravine.

I was about to start removing Japanese knotweed from a salmon-bearing creek when I accidentally fell backwards off a log into a hole four feet below, smashing my head and wrist and landing twisted, feet in the air. From that moment on I was transfixed by the speed, caring and competency of everyone who arrived to help. First it was my two compassionate and quick-thinking streamkeeper partners, followed by a longtime SAR neighbour who switched plans to assess my needs, check vitals and keep me from passing out, and stayed for the long duration.

Then, it was two awesome BC Ambulance paramedics working overtime; followed by about a dozen Gibsons and Area E firefighters with gear, chainsaws, lots of humour and brute strength; and then the highly skilled SAR rope team and regular team members. The coordinated teamwork from all responders was impressive. They made the stretcher/rope ride to the top of the hill smooth, comfortable, and even entertaining!

I also want to thank the property owners who very graciously permitted the large group of first responders to stage their command centre in their yard.

The emergency care by staff and doctors at Sechelt Hospital was excellent.

Thank you, Sunshine Coast first responders.
