Letter: Electoral boundaries suggestion from West Van residents unacceptable

'The Electoral Boundaries Commission is seeking to remove about 10,000 people from the federal West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky riding to bring it closer to the average riding population. Editor:

I am writing to draw attention to a disturbing proposal to change the federal electoral boundaries on the Sunshine Coast, a proposal to in effect cut the lower Coast in half.

The Electoral Boundaries Commission is seeking to remove about 10,000 people from the federal West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky riding to bring it closer to the average riding population. The commission, which has held hearings in West Vancouver and North Vancouver, has been considering a proposal to move the Park Royal/Ambleside area in West Vancouver into the North Vancouver riding.

This proposal has, understandably, upset some folks in West Vancouver. Some of those people are suggesting instead that the commission remove the necessary population from the Sunshine Coast, meaning that parts of Sechelt and areas north would end up with Campbell River and Powell River in the North Island-Powell River riding. This proposal upsets me.

I’m planning to tell the commission that I oppose this, and I’m thinking that others will want to do likewise: BC-CB@redecoupage-federal-redistribution.ca.
