Letter: Clown collars necessary for outdoor cats

Back to the cat debate: it is really sad when a well-fed neighbourhood cat slinks into your garden and goes on a killing spree of songbirds.

It does also seem wrong to keep an animal inside that wants to be outside.

How about if cats are to prowl and inevitably kill, then they have to wear the collars that look like bright clown collars. These collars are designed for songbirds to see them as they have a fourth cone in their eyes for detecting colour. The collars have a quick release if in the clutches of a predator, also a reflective strip so you can see them on roads, plus it’s super funny to see a bunch of clown cats around. Win, win – less death, more humour.

We have to licence our dogs, so instead of tags for cats the Town of Gibsons could provide these collars for a small licensing fee.
