In regards to the letters arguing about keeping cats in or out, my opinion is let them roam.
I worked for Wildlife in Burnaby for around three years picking up injured animals, a lot of birds, including one that was due to a cat. The rest were due to being hit by a vehicle, flying into a window, and having a virus that just kills them. It’s a fight between cats and humans, and I believe humans are the ones killing more birds than cats. Not only that, birds are on the food chain for cats.
In Toronto they made a law that the buildings downtown have to be built with a new glass, one that birds do not see a reflection in. Why? Because they had birds hitting their buildings, a lot, and falling dead to the ground. They are fixing their problem. I believe if it was a problem with cats, Mother Nature will take care of it, but I don’t believe there is a problem. The white rhino just recently became extinct. So why aren’t we locking ourselves in our houses and forbidding ourselves from going outside? It’s our fault!
Locking cats inside is called cruelty to animals. I’m not saying all cats should be let out, I’m just saying people should have the choice to let their cats out. Not all cats catch birds, and a lot of humans are killing birds and they aren’t being locked inside.
