Re: “No Seaside vision” by Cecilia Ohm-Eriksen, Letters, Jan. 6.
Cecilia’s comments are bang on. To carry this further, let’s break it down with a walk along an area of the beach in Sechelt, starting with the Wharf Street Pier and playground where it is quite charming – benches to sit on, lovely trees and greenery. Then we continue along the seawall lined with more trees, benches and some attractive apartments/condos, in particular the ones close to the lookout point on Inlet Avenue that have attractive wood siding.
Then we have this out of place chunk of concrete called The Watermark, like a huge sore thumb screaming that this was only all about the money. Once you get past the Driftwood Inn, things start looking one with nature again as we head along Snickett Park – indeed, a lovely seaside walk with trees, shrubs, beautiful rock formations, benches – totally charming.
Cecilia is bang on again when she says our politicians just think development. They’ve already proven that “it’s all about the money,” so what would make anyone think anything has changed, or would change?
Views are more than just looking at the ocean, such as on the long, bleak, barren, stark stretch along that monolithic Watermark. Why can’t our politicians focus on the mish-mash of what is and improve that whole area and leave the rest of nature alone, at least until they get the hang of it? Wow, what a concept.
