Kindness on the Coast

Letters

Editor:

Recently I experienced a most wonderful act of kindness, one I shall cherish a very long time.

One morning on my way to work in Sechelt my truck broke down. Out of desperation, I began hitchhiking. Almost immediately Marilynn and her Express 90 bus approached. I frantically waved, hoping she’d know it was I, a regular bus traveller, who today was not doing well attempting the solo commute! Recognizing me, she stopped and waited at the designated stop a great distance ahead.

As I boarded her bus, I reached into my wide-open bag to search for my wallet. It was not there! Marilyn allowed me to stay on board so I sat down and began to pray that I had left it in the truck, and not at the side of the road.

At the next bus stop, a man jumped aboard with a wallet in his hand and asked aloud, “Is there a Brian on the bus?” He had witnessed me running for the bus and saw my wallet tumble out of my bag. He had stopped his car, retrieved it and followed the bus to get it back to me. The passengers cheered and applauded when he gave it to me!

There are kind people in every community throughout this world of ours but I’m not sure how often something such as this happens. The fact this occurred here on the Sunshine Coast is quite understandable. We live in a very special place, thanks to people like the fellow who returned my wallet, to Marilyn, and to the fine folks on board Express 90 that morning.
