I met John Alvarez while I was working in the Salmon Inlet. I was staying in a bunkhouse at Clowhom and came across him around the camp.

I was new to the Sunshine Coast and he became my first friend.

As it was John’s easy nature to extend friendship and hospitality, it was just like him to invite me over to the lodge. I was soon comfortable dropping by regularly for a cup of tea and conversation, a practice that continued for the years I remained at Clowhom.

John’s friendship initially lifted all the loneliness and intensity of being a logger in a logging camp but it continued after I left the camp and he and Rosella moved to Sechelt. I remember with fondness our walks together in the forest above his home as well as all of our other encounters since then.

Thank you, John, for your kindness and the gift of friendship.
