It’s time to cry wolf

The federal NDP is currently under fire for using taxpayers’ money for political advertising, around a million dollars in partisan mailings. What about the extensive advertising done by Sechelt’s council urging taxpayers to vote “yes” to their referendum to borrow more money for big budget projects.

Any similarities here?

Referendums must remain neutral or they are ineffective. You should never be told by your municipal government how to vote on them, especially using the voters’ money.

Your municipal government holds a position of authority and trust, and if you are told by them to vote yes on a referendum in a 56 per cent retired community, you will vote yes because your city government is telling you to.

This is not right and everyone knows it.

The Sechelt public were told to vote yes in newspaper and radio advertising. We were sent personal letters by the District telling us how to vote yes and why.

Why have a referendum in Sechelt if one side can spend tons of your money to vote yes? The problem is when one side is eliminated, you never are presented a choice, because one side dominates and you never hear the argument.

How bad does it have to get before someone cries wolf?
