With regard to the recent controversy about the magnificent top-up of our premier’s salary by the provincial Liberal party:

Whether or not the extra $50,000 is a “commission,” as suggested in the Legislature, it is highly unlikely the party could pay it if they and Ms. Clark did not solicit multi-thousand-dollar donations and exclusive access to her from corporate entities.

This is further strong proof of the need for B.C. to ban all corporate and union donations to political parties, and place strict caps on individual donations. Pushed by public outcry, Ontario has recently promised this reform. The federal government did it in 2007. Quebec set the lowest limits in the country in 2013, and thus helped eliminate its claim to being seen as “Most Corrupt Province in Canada,” according to the National Post.

B.C. would now appear to be in the running for that unsavory description.
