How meters save water

We are old folks living in an old house made up of five one-bedroom apartments. Last year, the SCRD installed water meters in our area.

A few weeks ago, the SCRD sent us a note alerting us that our water meter indicated continuous 24-hour water flow at our house. Along with that was a brochure illustrating likely places to look for leaks. Sure enough, one apartment had a leaky toilet and another had two leaky faucets. Both easy fixes. Great service – thank you, SCRD!

I am trying to understand the resistance to water metering. Given our water challenge over a hot summer, don’t we want to plug the leaks? Isn’t future water assurance all about capture, storage and efficient use of water? Isn’t metering an essential service that will more than pay for itself over a 20-year period?

And if we can get a federal Environmental Quality Program grant for metering, it will pay for itself in no time!
