Housing in the works

Letters

Editor:

In response to Katherine Alexandra’s letter in your March 22 edition (“I want to come home”), I would like to reassure her that work is underway to address the lack of affordable housing on the Coast. In fact, that is the sole focus of the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS), incorporated as a non-profit in 2015: to acquire, develop and operate a range of affordable, quality housing options for Sunshine Coast residents.

By partnering with the local building industry, municipal governments and others who recognize the importance of affordable, decent housing, I’m pleased to say that we have several projects at various stages of development – including a small scale project in Lower Gibsons expected to open its doors in the first quarter of 2020, a 40-unit development in Upper Gibsons currently in the rezoning phase with construction expected to begin in the first half of 2020, and projects of various sizes being assessed in other communities on the Coast.

I encourage your readers to visit www.affordablesc.org to learn how you might support our work to build a Sunshine Coast where a range of affordable, quality housing options are readily available, and are accepted as an essential component of strong communities.
