Honouring Emilie Shaw

Letters

Editor:

I wish to thank you on behalf of my whole family who are scattered around the world, for all the love and interest you have shown towards my recently deceased mom, the Amazing Emilie Shaw. The oldest resident of the Sunshine Coast, at 107.5 years old, slipped away from infection complications on Tuesday, Jan. 17. But because you took the time and interest to talk to her and to find out her incredible history, her name became known from one end of the Sunshine Coast to the other. Your articles gave people inspiration to keep on keeping on, just as did the Energizer Bunny, Emilie. Many have been touched and inspired by her fortitude, spirit and stories.

Because of your newspaper coverage, the District of Sechelt proclaimed July 9, 2016 Emilie Shaw Day in honour of her being the oldest resident on the Coast. Our family will never forget this incredible honour and the kindness shown to her. We once again thank you and the District of Sechelt for the love and caring demonstrated towards my Mom. I thank all the Shorncliffe caring nurses and staff who loved Mom as their own. So very special.

It is refreshing to open a newspaper and read stories of hope and inspiration, and ones that focus on a community and its citizens. That’s what makes your newspaper so outstanding. We thank you again for honouring Emilie.
