High marks for hospital

Letters

Editor:

Just before Christmas I suddenly found myself in Sechelt Hospital being prepared for major surgery. My experience throughout my stay was so positive I wanted to share it.

One would think I would be helicoptered to Lions Gate Hospital but thankfully it wasn’t necessary. Very soon after meeting the surgeon Dr. Menezes and the anesthetist Dr. Mundy while in Emergency I knew I was in very competent hands. The surgery was a complete success. During my post-operative time in the Critical Care Unit I received excellent care by the very competent RN staff. I always felt safe. My pain was complicated and Dr. Mundy had it completely under control.

Some fun facts I learned during my stay – there is a program to fill nursing shortages on a short-term basis called The Travellers. RNs from all over Canada in this program will be flown to the facility they’ve agreed to and their lodging is provided. In talking with the nurses, I heard that one of the big benefits is the sharing of knowledge. I also had no idea there were so many young professionals living on the Coast. This was very true of nurses in the hospital and also support in the community. After I was discharged, a dietitian came to my home and I met with a wound care nurse in the Outpatient Clinic at the hospital. She continues to provide support through email and cell phone.

With our new hospital and the attraction of living on the Coast, we are drawing talented people. As a retired RN I could see how the new hospital is functioning and I give it high marks. There are still renovations pending but it’s well on the way to being a first-class facility.
