More than 3,200 communities in Canada are protected by volunteer fire departments. Thousands of dedicated people are putting their lives at risk to keep their communities and visitors safe. They do not do this for fame, glory or money, but because it's a job that needs to be done.

In doing so they are saving taxpayers scores of millions of dollars in wages.

The Canadian Asso-ciation of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) is proposing a $3,000 tax credit for volunteer fire fighters who perform more than 200 hours of service a year. This would go a long way to aid in recruitment and retention of volunteers. Everyone's time is valuable, it seems more so now than ever. It's getting harder and harder to find people willing to make the commitment to join the volunteer fire service. This is especially evident here as the demographics change in our community.

Please see http://givefire-fighterscredit.ca/ to sign the petition and support Cana-da's volunteer firefighters.
