I just got home from watching the Sea Cavalcade parade with a group of friends, and we had tons of fun. Thank you and congratulations to the organizers and participants! The only disappointment was seeing a local company giving out helium-filled balloons, with ribbons attached. It’s hard to believe that in 2018 there is anyone who doesn’t know that helium balloons kill wildlife, particularly in a marine community such as ours. Google “helium balloons kill marine life” and you will find dozens of pages outlining the environmental damage done and death caused by a selfish advertising gimmick. If companies will not make the responsible decision themselves, it looks like we need to legislate by the lowest common denominator, as usual, and ban helium balloons in the parade, and on the Sunshine Coast as a whole. If you deal with this company and you prefer not to kill wildlife with garbage, a polite suggestion that they find less deadly ways to advertise might go a long way.
