As a U.K. resident here on the Coast for the summer each year, I can only echo Mary Beth Knechtel’s concern regarding the hazardous nature of knotweed (“False take on invasives,” Aug. 25).
We have recently lost a house sale because the garden had it present, and no mortgage company would loan on it. We have had to have it eradicated by a company that gives a certificate for non-return. You cannot burn it or take it to the dump. If you cut it and carry it, the spores will grow where they land. If your neighbour has it and refuses to treat it, you can take them to court to force them to. Growing it as a vegetable? I don’t think so.
