Editor:
The April 20 letter, “Chemical oversight,” appears to be based on half-truths and innuendo. Let’s start with the obvious. The water treatment plant is a success in spite of apparent willful neglect and mismanagement.
The toxic chemicals referred to are citric acid (lemon juice), sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine as used in pools and hot tubs to kill bacteria), and sodium hypochlorite (also known as caustic soda and used as a degreaser and cleaner when prepping walls for fresh paint). These are sold in quantity at every grocery and hardware outlet on the Coast, subsequently used and dumped into septic fields and sewers.
What is no longer stored at Ebbtide are tanks of compressed liquid chlorine, which actually are dangerous to humans, but they were there for 35 years without incident.
If we’re going to talk about mismanagement, it has to fall squarely on the shoulders of the current mayor and council, since the plant was barely operational when they took office.
So please, stop already.
