Gospel Rock terrors

Letters

Editor:

I will never forget that day in 1973 when we discovered the village of Gibsons. The pace seemed perfect and that view from the bluff above Gospel Rock with its twisty narrow road, heavenly. Needless to say we stayed. The Beachcombers filmed, Bob Kelly picked up garbage for the whole town and the round trip fare to Horseshoe Bay was $5 for car and driver. There was even hourly two-ship service Friday p.m., Saturday a.m., Sunday p.m. and Monday a.m. Growth was gentle in the town but malls, bypasses, treatment plants and rec centres reshaped the land until 2017 when billions of dollars of proposals for growth are poised to begin.

Change is inevitable, of course – except for Gospel Rock’s 250 metres of terror. Cyclists and walkers avoid taking a chance, and who can blame them? My Christmas wish for the last 44 years has been for someone to have a priority tweak and address this issue, but no. As they say on Monday night football, C’mon man! One shouldn’t have to face death by pickup truck with every bike ride or walk.
