This is in response to the letter of Sarama (“Goosebird indeed a creek,” July 1), which refers to a drainage ditch in lower Gibsons as a “creek.” Goosebird is a documented ditch that generally drains a swamp behind the OAP Hall and along the east side of Burns Road. I have lived at the headwaters of this drainage system for 25 years and walk along and across the ditches several times per week. In hot summer weather, these drainage works dry up to an extent that fish are unlikely to survive on a sustainable basis.

Any attempt to create an artificial, “natural” open channel would require the construction of at least two bridges and the destruction of several houses.

Without criticizing the present council: this is an excessively extravagant project that would eliminate valuable, developable land in the lower village, where such land is in short supply.
