If the District of Sechelt is going to continue to put four-way stops in downtown Sechelt, they should be making sure that people know how to use them. Pretty well every time I go downtown, somebody jumps their turn at one of the many four-ways, or they don’t know what to do if they arrive at the intersection the same time as another vehicle. Some people think that as long as they touch their brake briefly they can go, even if someone is there ahead of them.
I have seen a lineup of cars heading out of downtown, backed up and blocking the intersection at the four-way beside the post office. The one by Trail Bay Centre is a disaster, especially for pedestrians, as drivers have no problem barging through them when someone is on the crosswalk.
I thought the new four-way by the library would be safer, but recently, when I was just about to take my turn to go left, a woman in an SUV jumped her turn coming out of the library and practically crashed into me.
Some local drivers seem to have forgotten how to use a four-way stop, and some people don’t care about rules because they like to be first.
I hope to see an information campaign (with diagrams) in the paper reminding people of these rules soon, and/or an RCMP presence at these stops, for all of our safety.
