Several correspondents have asked who benefits if the fixed link goes ahead. Others have concerns that our coastal/rural way of life will be destroyed. Well, as the old saying goes, “Follow the money.” Many here on the Coast and in Vancouver would add dramatically to their existing fortunes. Previous councillors, several of whom are still active today, spent around $150,000 of taxpayers’ money on the Sechelt Official Community Plan (OCP) and its revisions. They accepted its recommendations. I attended those meetings. Quote: “We will not allow urban sprawl,” “We will retain Sechelt’s rural character,” and much more along the same lines. Already those commitments have been abandoned. A walk around Sangara’s current development in West Sechelt, and he’s only now completing Phase 1, will show what is in store. All of the OCP guidelines have been abandoned when it comes to protecting our way of life. Limits in our water supply system? Social services? Medical services? Hospital capacity? Care home capacity? Social housing? Special needs? All our services have a finite capacity. All ignored when it comes to growth and project approval. Our mayors and councillors will never answer the question: “What is a sustainable population for our Community?”
Of course the fixed link would solve Vancouver’s housing crisis.
