Re: “Electoral reform campaign begins July 1,” June 1.
I very much appreciate the factual reporting of the announcement. I really like the clarity of the first question and I am glad that those who wish to can vote for whichever system they prefer. I am, however, dismayed by the article’s emphasis on system mechanics as it doesn’t address the real issue – what are we getting? We need to focus on the results, just as we do when buying a car. We do know what we will get with any of the proposed systems.
• No region will have fewer MLAs than now.
• There would be no more than eight extra MLAs.
• Small fringe parties will not be elected.
• Local representation will be maintained.
• We can evaluate again after two elections.
• Our ideas and values will be more represented in the legislature.
• Planning will be more stable and long-term.
• MLAs will be more collaborative and respectful.
These will be the results of all the proposed systems. These are the systems that you get to drive. A change to a proportional system will strengthen our democracy. No more governments that only represent 40 per cent or less of the people.
