Fixed link misrepresented

Letters

Editor:

I have concerns about your editorial “Benefits of being unlinked” (Oct. 7) where you cited the 2016 Vital Signs survey. Were you aware that the survey is based only on the perceptions of 426 Sunshine Coast participants, 71 per cent female, 84 per cent over age 45 and 55 per cent with spouse and no dependents? Is it fair to say that 426 out of 30,000 represent the majority opinion for the Coast? I recall a survey on the Tolled Fixed Link Facebook page where 80 to 85 per cent responded in favour. In my opinion, the Coast will receive greater benefits by ending ferry service in favour of a tolled fixed link. If keeping the undesirables out is a positive side effect of a 40-minute ferry ride, then an equal benefit will come from a 90-minute drive on a toll road. I believe you misrepresented the reality of building a fixed link with your catch phrase: “road blasted through the wild spirit places.” Worldwide there are raised viaducts crossing over environmentally sensitive areas where blasting was not used. Please give equal coverage for the opinions of coastal residents who see a greater benefit of a tolled fixed link.
