Finished with NDP over Site C

Letters

(The following letter was sent to the BC NDP and copied to Coast Reporter.)

I have given this matter considerable thought. It is not a step taken lightly or in the heat of the moment.

Please be advised that I will no longer support the BC NDP as a result of the massive betrayal by John Horgan and the NDP caucus to continue with the travesty of justice, decency, and common sense that is Site C. It is hard to put into words that you would read how devastating Horgan’s decision is to me and my husband and my family and my friends and to so many people in my community.

Site C dam will kill the Peace River Valley, destroying life-giving ecosystems and the rich and unique biodiversity that supports life outside the valley. Site C dam will rip the still beating heart out of Treaty 8 territory. These are not extreme statements. Look at the facts in the Environmental Assessment. Look at the cumulative impacts of massive industrialization in Treaty 8 territory in northeastern B.C.

The NDP government will be spending taxpayer and ratepayer’s money to defend an indefensible decision against the West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations’ lawsuit. It will support the oh-so-polite but vicious systemic racism that flies in the face of reconciliation and respect for UNDRIP.

There is no justification to build Site C. None of the reasons given and not given by Horgan or any MLAs are tenable. None of the documents that were the basis of the decision have been made available for public scrutiny. Destroying a river valley for power we don’t need and won’t be able to sell for the cost of production is simply unjustifiable.

Given that government has ignored its own party’s resolutions against Site C and the NDP election commitments in PowerBC, I have no faith left in the NDP as a party of integrity and as a party that respects democracy.
