Re: “Wilkinson says he’s ready to take on NDP from Day 1,” Dec. 22.

Well, of course, Mr. Wilkinson doesn’t want proportional representation. PR would mean that if the Liberals want to form the government by themselves, then they would have to actually persuade over 50 per cent of voters to vote for them.

Mr. Wilkinson is correct about one thing. Local issues are important – yet I find it interesting that the Liberals are perfectly happy to ignore all the Liberal supporters in traditional NDP ridings. Many thousands of Liberals, who don’t have a Liberal MLA, are not represented in the legislature – no matter who forms the government.

When we have a system of proportional representation, most voters will have an MLA in the legislature who represents their values. The local issues of an NDP, Green, Conservative or Liberal voter will have a much bigger voice in the conversation that creates our legislation.

As for Mr. Wilkinson’s assertion that somehow the referendum is undemocratic – if that is true then the Liberal party itself is undemocratic. Liberals elect their leaders with a proportional system, a 50 per cent plus one vote and no minimum participation.

Methinks that Mr. Wilkinson doth protest too much. It’s time the Liberal party takes its rightful place in the legislature – if 30 per cent of the vote, then 30 per cent of the MLAs.
