Encourage pedestrian traffic

I've noticed in some letters lately that people say Vancouver ruined the Granville Street corridor by installing a mall in the street. That really is not where the downfall exists with that problem.

When they built that street mall, they allowed taxis and buses to use that street and they gave out jay walking tickets to anyone who didn't cross at the corner. Now what kind of street mall is that? In any other large city, the street is completely closed to all non-pedestrian traffic and people can walk freely back and forth across the mall, creating a nice place to be, with the resulting boost to local business.

They were idiots in Vancouver, it's true, and they shouldn't be allowed as an example due to extremely poor planning. What this city needs more than anything is a gateway to the wharf so we can encourage people to pull over and get out of their cars. Then business will get better.
