Editor:
Some of the promised benefits by the George developer are starting to evaporate and the shovels haven’t even broken ground.
Over the summer, staff and the developer’s agent have agreed in principle to the following items.
Gibsons will now retain the ownership of the lower portion of Winn Road, but it will become the plaza for the George. The George will be responsible for the maintenance, but the developer will not have to pay the Town $425,000 for the purchase of this section of road as has been discussed, since the project passed first and second reading. A big loss for Gibsons taxpayers.
With regard to the Prowse Road sewage lift station, the developer refused to accommodate the Town’s request to include an extension of works (beyond what is required by the subdivision bylaw) to the Prowse Road intersection. This item of negotiation has been removed from the development agreement items. Now Gibsons taxpayers will have to pay. Another loss for the public.
Some of the required replacement of 12 street parking stalls lost near the post office may be made up by providing new stalls on Gibsons Way near School Road. A loss for those who like to park near the post office to get their mail.
How long will we not be able to enjoy Winegarden Park? One year? Two years? Another loss for the public.
The George developer is withdrawing some of the enticing and forecasted economic benefits for the Town, and council has accepted it without hesitation.
When will the Town stop acquiescing and start demanding compensation to Gibsons residents from the developer?
After the Oct. 1 public hearing, it will be too late.
