It has been a great start for the salmon in Howe Sound. Even a limited commercial fishery was allowed in, first of its kind in 50 years.
Sports fisherman climbing over each other by the river, and the sport fishing industry, can been seen everywhere on the Sound. This is the payback for sustainable fish stock management locally here.
A danger looms, however. A gravel mine proposal at McNab Creek estuary will put those stocks from that river system in jeopardy. This is not to say that industry is not welcome in the area. Logging, for instance, has gone on in that valley for 100 years and continues today and into the future, but we must have industry that fits the region. Gravel mines do operate up and down our coast providing us with the necessary resources that society demands, but allowing mining to start inside the McNab estuary would end up being the poster child of poor planning and mismanaged resource extraction.
