While Sechelt council recently rejected implementing any cat bylaws, I hope and trust they will reconsider soon.
The bylaw department’s report to council contradicted the advice of the BC SPCA, the Stewardship Centre of BC, the CFHS and Nature Canada. Given that the experts have reached entirely different conclusions, it seems only responsible that the district form an advisory panel made up of the cat and nature organizations in our area to figure out a path forward.
For the sake of the welfare of wildlife and our pets, not to mention our purse strings, we need to do better. The proposed education campaign is a great idea, but if the bylaw report is a reflection of the district’s understanding of the issue, they would benefit from having this committee’s advice on how to go about that public education. Why not also charge that committee with creating a fully-fledged plan for solving the problem? The solutions are only going to get more expensive as time passes.
