Don’t blame the boomers

Recently, my level-headed friend was caught into a vociferous dispute by a younger man who blamed the baby boomers for the high price of real estate in Sechelt.

The unaffordable price of homes for our children and grandchildren results from many factors: centuries of unsettled land claims, decades of money laundering, the demand for the mild climate of the West Coast, the density that comes with unbridled development.

The insecurity caused by the Ponzi scheme of our financial system and the corruption of governments make people want hard assets. Only a few years ago some people didn’t want to tie up their salaries and time buying and maintaining a home.

Let’s stop this manufactured blaming. We all need peace, seeds for food, cloth for clothes, spiritual and emotional comfort. We are all one species. Words are the most imprecise form of communication. A smile, a frown, a random act of kindness are more immediate and true. Look to the reality behind the fine words.
