Disbelief over SCRD budget

Letters

Editor:

The next SCRD election can’t come soon enough as far as I and many seniors are concerned. Over the past many months, with growing alarm, we have watched the absence of thoughtful leadership on public financial engagement.

Taxpayers reading reports on the SCRD budget process must be shaking their heads in disbelief at the lack of a coherent explanation or any attempt to consult the public beforehand for a slated 15 per cent operating budget increase (“SCRD budget given second reading,” March 6). Flying by the seat of your pants after the fact just won’t cut it, if you want our precious pension tax-dollars.

I hope the tax news is all just a simple misunderstanding based on bad reporting. If not, the SCRD Board has to respond quickly by downsizing plans before taxpayer confidence collapses completely and provincial authorities are petitioned to step in and clean up the mess.

At the very least, I would expect a director or two, or perhaps the chair, would offer to resign. Otherwise, voters like me will regretfully conclude it’s time to clean house at the ballot box.
