Re: “SCCF responds to public, introduces ‘ecosystem management’ approach,” May 21.
I seem to be in a state of disbelief. Maybe it’s the numerous arrests of those determined individuals protesting the logging of our ancient forests in the Fairy Creek watershed that heightened my awareness, but I found I had to read the article about the Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF) and its logging plans several times.
Great that SCCF has a policy to not harvest what is officially designated as old growth. But why are they still planning to log four cutblocks in the 141-250-year range. Really? REALLY? These forests are the coming generations’ old growth.
Is our best vision for the coast and elsewhere to have remnant old growth tree museums or maybe simply some virtual reality product? Is this the legacy our youth and future generations deserve? Is this really the best we can do?
I think many of us expect more of our provincial government or is there really no vision beyond an election cycle? Or has the environmental moral compass gone totally wonky? The time for action is now and clearly many people who have made their voices heard here and on Vancouver Island get that.
The protests go on year after year, decade after decade trying to preserve the rapidly dwindling ancient forests. Will this continue until there is nothing left to protect, because it will all be gone?
When will this provincial government act decisively for the future?
