Dear SCRD zero waste folks

The following letter was sent to the Sunshine Coast Regional District and copied to Coast Reporter. Regarding your invitation to dinner and entertainment at the Cedars Inn on April 1: my partner and I will not be attending this event.

The following letter was sent to the Sunshine Coast Regional District and copied to Coast Reporter.

Regarding your invitation to dinner and entertainment at the Cedars Inn on April 1: my partner and I will not be attending this event. I would like to know exactly how much this dinner and entertainment will cost taxpayers?

Maybe you meant it as an April Fool's joke, to bribe the public with their own money? If not, all I can say is - talk about "bread and circuses!"

Meanwhile, I am still forced to send most of my recyclables up to Sechelt and back, via the IGA mall, at taxpayer expense, because your competition has caused the Gibsons Recycling Depot to be unable to accept cardboard, newsprint, glass, etc. Thankfully, they still accept hard-to-recycle materials such as Styrofoam, batteries, electronics and many other items. The SCRD said, years ago, that the IGA bins were only temporary. Why are they still there when a depot willing to take all those items, at no cost to the taxpayer, exists just blocks away?

How much restaurant food will end up in the dumpster after this "Path to Sustainability" extravaganza? If you'd truly wanted to create a grass-roots event, wouldn't a potluck, with everyone taking their left-overs home, have been more sustainable?
