Credit due, blame earned

Letters

Editor:

I’m unaccustomed to complimenting the governance of Mayor Milne, but credit must be given when due. At the recent showdown between Sechelt council and the SCRD representatives over the controversial water supply issue, Mayor Milne contributed enlightened and progressive comments toward the “reservoir solution” to this community problem. Perhaps, his seeming enthusiasm might move things forward a little faster than the alternative proposed by SCRD.

Unfortunately, this element of leadership is too little too late on other issues affecting Sechelt. Three years into his term and not much accomplished. It’s worth noting that with previous mayor and councillors, their three-year term would now be over and if that was the case here, what would they have to show for it? All major development projects have come to a standstill. RTC’s proposal has yet again been rejected by mayor and council even though our professional planning department has recommended approval. Hopefully, revenues from these projects are not being factored into the 2018 budget.

Affordable housing, homeless shelters (permanent), Seawatch sinkholes, senior care facilities, etc., are all in a state of stagnation. What will the new year bring? Various people on council will, by then, be in campaign mode for next October, so there could be some grandstanding going on by some in a last-ditch effort to avoid a “lost four years” scenario.
