Isn’t it time that we discussed the long line of ferry traffic that quickly comes to a crawl along our splendid, barely less than three kilometres long highway? To those who have lived in Langdale awhile, we can miss the Gibsons Way crawl and turn off at Cemetery or Reed roads. But to visitors who rely on the otherwise excellent booklet called Visitors’ Choice Sunshine Coast, they go to pages 22 and 23. And what do they find? Highway 101 highlighted in red. And it directs them right through the most heavily trafficked part of Gibsons. Until now, I didn’t know the reason. Now I do. And if it was to bring more business to Upper Gibsons, someone should be locked up.
Let’s look again at pages 22 and 23 of Visitors’ Choice. They didn’t turn left at Stewart for no reason. The top of page 22 is bare of roads and housing. Maybe the government ran out of money when they built the bypass. Maybe there was some sacred reason the emptiness was preserved. Agricultural reserve? The highway they did build could possibly have been done at lower cost. Do we really need an Autobahn?
Somebody or somebodies in high places made a bad decision. My letter is a voyage of discovery and I would like to know the full story.
