Contradiction in Leap agenda

Re: “Leap sets out correct agenda” (Letter by Michael Siddall, April 22).

The Leap Manifesto says: “There is no longer an excuse for building new infrastructure projects that lock us into increased extraction decades into the future. The new iron law of energy development must be: if you wouldn’t want it in your backyard, then it doesn’t belong in anyone’s backyard. That applies equally to oil and gas pipelines, fracking in New Brunswick, Quebec and British Columbia, increased tanker traffic off our coasts, and to Canadian-owned mining projects the world over.”

Given that current global mining infrastructure (regardless of nationality of mining company) is not enough to service the growing demand for metals/minerals necessary to achieve the “green economy” world the Leap Manifesto writers, signatories and supporters fantasize about, how do we achieve the goals of the Leap Manifesto without new mines?

That question was posed to Avi and Naomi this past October, and again a few weeks ago. To date there has been no answer. Maybe Mr. Siddall can provide an answer for them?
