Conspicuous by absence

Letters

Editor:

I was interested to see the letter from Gordon Wilson, father of Liberal candidate Mathew Wilson,  (“Green breach of trust,” June 30), in which he accuses Green Party leader Andrew Weaver of engaging in “old-style backroom politics by cutting a deal with the NDP... a breach of trust with the electorate” and Green candidate Kim Darwin of being “a bit naïve.”

I’m not surprised that Mr. Wilson is upset that this deal ends the Liberals’ tenure, since he is currently on a $150,000-a-year Liberal government contract to promote LNG.

And I am not surprised that Wilson feels confident in offering his wisdom, since he is a former leader of the Liberal party.

What does surprise me is that he left out a key piece of information. His signature identified him as “Former Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Finance, Education, BC Ferries and International Trade” and, coming right after mention of his Liberal leadership, those new to B.C. politics might be forgiven for thinking he was a Liberal cabinet minister. Not so. After being elected Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA as the Progressive Democratic Alliance candidate in 1996, Wilson crossed the floor and became a minister in the NDP cabinet of Glen Clark.

For more information about Mr. Wilson’s chequered political career, look him up on Wikipedia.
