Conference had lots to offer

Letters

Editor:

Thank you for the fine article about the presentation given by B.C.’s Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie at the March 3 Seniors Conference (“Seniors advocate counters common myths,” March 10). This is the third time the Community Resource Centre has hosted her in our community.  The audience was very appreciative; she is an engaging and informative speaker and we are always lucky to have her attend our sold-out events.

The conference also had a lot more to offer. It was the culmination of two years of collaborative work done by the Community Resource Centre’s Seniors Planning Table. The Seniors Planning Table is made up of 22 organizations and almost 60 individuals participating either at the table or as part of an action group.

The various sessions at the Seniors Conference reflected part of this work and included: Information and Referral Resources – How to be a Peer Navigator in Your Community; Dementia Friendly Communities Initiative; Getting Help in Your Home; It’s Not Right – Abuse Awareness; Frauds and Scams; and Celebrating Older Adults – A Call to Action.

Beyond the sessions, 28 local service providers were on hand for the close to 200 attendees to speak to. Everyone was surprised at the wealth of information and the variety of programs and services available here on the Sunshine Coast. For more information visit our website – www.resourcecentre.ca.

The evaluations from the day said it best: “So good! Let’s do it again and spread the word! I learned how important it is to be an informed senior. There is such a breadth of programs and services to access on the Sunshine Coast. Don’t be scared to make a referral. Good to know the Community Resource Centre can help! Thank you!”
