In response to the challenges to the climbing wall at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre (Coast Reporter letters, July 6), it is interesting to take a simple risk assessment approach.
The climbing wall creates and enhances existing hazards and resulting risks due the instructors not being able to continuously monitor the swimmers.
There are a large number of participants at potential risk and those risks are increased due to the age and experience levels of participants.
Some participants have disabilities which increases the duty of care of the Aquatic Centre to provide adequate supervision.
There is decreased communication between instructor and swimmers caused by the wall deflecting voice instruction which, for all, particularly those with hearing problems, increases risks and is distressing. There is additional strain on the voices of the instructors.
It can be argued that the wall in its current position creates more hazards and resulting risks than benefits.
