Click for recycling info

Letters

Editor:

It’s unfortunate that R. Mike Steele (“Blue box confusion,” Letters, Sept. 21) found it so difficult to find information about recycling collection in Sechelt.

This important information should be easy to find in a simple Google search. The confusion is, most of us don’t know which local government handles what. In this case, it is not the SCRD; it is the District of Sechelt.

When it was announced that Direct Disposal would not be accepting plastic bags, I went to the District of Sechelt office and asked for a brochure. I was told to download it from the district’s website, www.sechelt.ca, which was cumbersome. I discovered the best thing to do was Google: “Recycling, District of Sechelt.”

“Garbage and Recycling Information – District of Sechelt” comes up. Click on that, then on the right hand side of page, click on “Curbside Recycling Program Guide and Calendar.” This takes you to the downloadable brochure, and what is acceptable and what isn’t. Anything you can’t find listed can be checked out at RecycleBC.ca.

As far as I know, glass and Styrofoam have never been accepted at curbside, but they are at Salish Soils and Gibsons Recycling.

Recently I found out that London Drugs accepts potato chip bags, dry pasta packaging (plastic), fruit net bags, bubble wrap, standup pouches and candy wrappers.

Our household has whittled weekly garbage down to one small bag by recycling, composting and taking other food waste to Salish.

It would be better to recycle all in one place, but most of us make a trip to Gibsons occasionally and can stop at Salish when in Sechelt.

It would be even better if more attention was paid to the “Reduce/Reuse” part of the three R’s, by us and by our retailers and their suppliers.
