Clean air incentives

Letters

Editor:

The Sunshine Coast Clean Air Society (SCCAS) has issued rebates to 351 Coast residents with grant funds from B.C.’s Ministry of Environment under contracts between the SCCAS and the BC Lung Association awarded from the Wood Stove Exchange Program from 2009 through 2016.

As technologies have changed over the years and research has brought to light the detrimental health effects of wood smoke, the terms of the 2018 grant allow for more discretion on appliance eligibility and better incentives for cleaner options.

Our targets for the 2018 program are:

• Two vouchers at $650 for residents of the District of Sechelt converting to a heat pump.

• Sixteen vouchers at $400 for any Sunshine Coast resident converting to gas, electric baseboards or a heat pump.

• Seven vouchers at $250 each for rural residents of the Sunshine Coast, living further than 100 m from any neighbour, upgrading to wood stoves emitting less than 2.0 g/h of particulate matter as will be required in 2020.
