How long are we going to tolerate CAVE people – “Citizens Against Virtually Everything” – in our community?
Against the George, against the Gibsons Public Market, against Gospel Rock, and lately, against Trellis seniors housing. Ask the question: who could possibly be against keeping our seniors in our community? CAVE people, of course. CAVE people probably don’t even live in Gibsons; and the last election showed voters clearly wanted change and in particular wanted the George Hotel project developed by voting in the mayor and councillors they did – done deal.
The Gibsons tax base is small; the town is short on cash, half broke. Town staff are preparing a report summarizing the costs to the Town of Gibsons to defend the legal challenges filed by CAVEs against the George, for unfounded appeal claims that were eventually dropped. In early August, Gibsons Mayor Wayne Rowe stated he thinks the costs probably come to about $200,000 – costs that may end up being passed onto Gibsons taxpayers.
The final permits have been issued for the George to proceed, yet a small group of negative people, probably financed by outside sources, continues to cause delays and unnecessary expense. This is not helpful for our local community.
