Re: “Cats have deadly impact” by Christine Pawley, Letters, July 6.
Cats are dangerous predators because they kill birds? Well, then birds too are dangerous predators because they kill worms and insects. How many birds, worms, slugs, snails, squirrels, mice and insects do you think Christine has killed with her car? This debate could go in circles forever, but the important point is that the solution to cats killing birds is not to condemn cats to life in an indoor prison.
Cats are extremely intelligent, curious creatures who seek happiness and satisfaction just like humans do. To deprive them of fresh air, the outdoor smells, the feel of grass under their feet, etc., is cruel. Imagine never leaving your house – how would you like it? And cats don’t get to watch TV, talk on the phone, play on their computer or read a book. And how do birds die in the wild anyway? Very few of them die of old age. According to research, most of them are predated (killed) by other birds and mammals! I can appreciate that Christine Pawley is a bird lover and not much of a cat lover, but please – have a heart!
