Cadets transformed me

Letters

Editor:

I would like to thank the officers and volunteers of 2963 Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadets for making my cadet experience so enjoyable. You helped me become the person I am now. Being in 2963 has been one of the best things I have done in my life.  Army cadets has transformed me from a follower to a leader. It taught me responsibility, how to be able to take charge in stressful situations; it also tested my ability to lead any size group under any circumstances, which is super useful out in the world because no matter what I decide to do with my life, at some point I may need to lead or take charge of a group.

Army cadets has taught me many different outdoor and survival skills such as how to tie knots and lashing, how to survive in cold weather, how to make improvised shelters and many other just plain cool things. There were also some perks, which included getting high school credits for the things I was doing at cadets. I was able to go on expeditions, and volunteer in the community. I also got paid to go to summer camp. Most of all Army cadets made me into a better member of my community by making me realize that helping out within my community makes a huge impact even if you can’t see it right away. It makes you realize all the things you take for granted are the result of someone else’s hard work.

This Remembrance Day will be my last community function with 2963 Seaforth Cadets before I age out. I will miss and cherish the friends I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned.  2963 will be celebrating their 40th anniversary on Jan. 12, 2019. I invite everyone to celebrate with us and come out to meet our community’s future leaders. If you were once a cadet in 2963, please send stories of how cadets helped you become who you are now to [email protected].

If you are between the ages of 12 and 18, I invite you come and check us out on Tuesday evenings between 6 and 9 p.m. at our training property, 4403 Hilltop Road, Wilson Creek, or contact our commanding officer at [email protected] or 604-885-2965.
