Kudos to the Town of Gibsons for winning the Open for Business award and attracting more than 185 new businesses. This award celebrates communities “allowing small business to flourish.” How ironic – this has all happened without an establishment called The George. We were all asked to swallow the argument that if The George doesn’t happen, Gibsons’ small businesses will die and its economy will flop. This award shows the myth of that stance.
If we’re going to add new projects to the Gibsons waterfront, let’s make them in keeping with the size and character of the existing town, without obliterating the “stunning seaside setting” and “welcoming laid-back character.” Part of a successful “true renaissance” is having the wisdom and vision to know what already works and building on that – not destroying the very qualities and character of a town that people seek out for tourism, business, retirement, and a high quality of life.
