Bring on cat bylaw

Letters

Editor:

This is to all cat owners. I have to tell you that your kitty is definitely killing birds in your neighbours’ gardens. Unless you have an indoor cat, of course.

I have owned my house and garden for 10 years and have a six-foot fence around it. I have fought a constant battle throughout that time with my neighbours’ cats, who have no problem jumping the fence. I have tried all manner of defences, nets on top of the fence, fishing line strung between fence posts, sonic deterrents, fake cats, etc. All to no avail. Stones around the sides of the house stopped them using my garden to do their business at least! I asked a neighbour to put a bell collar on their cat, but apparently it would rip it off.

A beautiful song sparrow who has lived in my garden and evaded capture for several years, whose partner disappeared recently, also disappeared a week ago. I found a pile of feathers this morning.

The cats come in early in the morning or late at night while I’m asleep, and even during the day, despite my being at home a lot. I do the rounds at 7 a.m. and scare them out.

I think the only solution is a cat bylaw. I know Sechelt was considering one. I urge everyone who is experiencing similar problems to write to your local government demanding a bylaw, by email or letter.
