I quite understand Mark Durland's plea for a road or bridge to the mainland (Coast Reporter letters, March 28).
Of course, nothing is impossible engineering wise, but if one starts thinking about cost, we have to retreat into fantasyland. However we slice it, it's two bridges and roads on one or two islands, or maybe a tunnel.
The estimated cost of the new Port Mann Bridge was $3.3 billion. My best guess is that a land/bridge connection would cost about the same, maybe more.
If the 49,000 residents of the Coast were expected to pay the bill, then our ferry fares would be quite a bargain.
Let's think about it. Many years ago, a top class highway from Langdale, bypassing Gibsons and on to Sechelt, was started. Two kilometres were built. Why only two kilometres? No more money.
