Bit of sunshine gone

Hearing of the imminent closing of Barb Hetherington’s Zero Waste Store felt a little like hearing of the death of a beloved friend’s pet. Moving from Sechelt to Gibsons years ago, I first became aware of the store when I needed a place to take boxes of goods from an estate. Clearing things out was a long, slow, sad, yet necessary process. Over time, it developed into me getting to know Barb, Buddy and their staff. Their passion for what they were doing, the staff’s warm, helpful attitudes, their humorous approach and hard-working habits were endearing. I’ve lived in Gibsons for several years now, and feel a deep appreciation for their perseverance, dedication and good hearts.

I gradually realized that the Depot and its Zero Waste Store served as an important community hub, a social centre where people took home as many good feelings of connection, caring and news-sharing as they did of recycled items they’d resell, donate to causes, give to friends in need or simply use to add a little sparkle to someone else’s day. New friendships formed, old friends exchanged hugs and updates, corny jokes were inflicted, and harmless bits of local gossip were shared – all while folks looked at and for stuff they hadn’t known they’d needed until they saw it there! A lovely idea, beautifully organized, and a wonderful, relaxing way to spend a little time.

Hats off to you, Barb and Buddy, for this wonderful community-building idea! I know countless people who will feel as though a little bit of sunshine has left their lives when your Zero Waste Store closes its doors.
