Beyond recycling

Letters

Editor:

Many heartfelt letters have been published over the past month regarding concerns for recycling and other services traditionally offered by Gibsons Recycling Depot (GRD). Significant change is coming and we want to be proactive through public consultation to create the future the Sunshine Coast wants.

Barb Hetherington and Buddy Boyd owned and operated GRD for about 13 years and through their sheer determination and passion have shown the Sunshine Coast and our international visitors an “amuse-bouche” of the future for waste management. For various reasons they are shutting down certain services and have indicated interest in pursuing other aspirations such as Zero Waste Canada.

This raises a number of questions, of which the most important is, “How does our community wish to go forward?” This is where Urban Prospectors (UP!) comes into play. UP! has already held many meetings in both public, private and government sessions designed to assess interest and support opportunities to address our larger waste stream challenges. These engagements have made it clear there is more to this than just recycling.

People want to painlessly reduce their environmental impact, improve the overall well being of their communities, while simultaneously stimulating local economic resilience. With these three themes in mind, Urban Prospectors’ developing talented group is offering solutions to both public and private residents and businesses.

Over the next six weeks we will have tables in shopping malls and popular venues for our C3 enterprise to engage people and UP! members. We are seeking feedback of our vision to address gaps in infrastructure and services that will improve our communities’ environmental stewardship, sense of well being, and cultural significance.

We need your participation. Look for us, like us on Facebook or learn more from our website urbanprospectors.ca
