Better uses for site

Letters

Editor:

Knowing there has been controversy over the proposed residential assisted living facilities being planned for the Coast, I decided to walk over the site proposed for Clayton Lands beside Clayton Park. It is not possible to walk on the site but accessing the eastern area that borders it with the park is a short, pleasant walk for those who enjoy a walk. There are single-family homes on the west and south and a forest to the north of the site. It must be a great area for the families who live there who are physically active, hike and drive, because you need to be fit to clamber through the rocks and trails and elevations, and you need to drive to get to any community amenity like a shop or the library or the seniors centre. So building an assisted living facility on this property could not be more short-sighted. Elderly people need places to walk, places to visit, as much as possible to maintain some independence. If rezoned, the site could be used for a prison – it is inaccessible – or failing that, multi-family housing for the young and fit.
